Vernon County Relay for Life raises funds

Above, Nevada Mayor Brian Leonard reads a proclamation as the Vernon County Relay for Life begins. The all-night event, which began at 6 p.m., Friday, with brief ceremonies and a survivors walk, right, symbolizes the long journey through cancer treatment by continuing through the night, and ending at 6 a.m. -- with the rising of the sun. Dozens took part in the annual event, which raises funds for cancer research through the American Cancer Society. A balloon release and several other events were to highlight the Relay Friday night.
