Nevada Scouts return from Philmont ranch

Five Boy Scouts and their advisers from Troop 42, Nevada, returned Aug. 4 from a 10-day backpacking trek in the back country of northern New Mexico at the 137,000-acre Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M., Philmont is the most well-known "high adventure" camp operated by the Boy Scouts of America. The Troop 42 crew tackled "Itinerary 29," one of the Philmont's most challenging itineraries. The Scouts hiked more than 80 miles, carrying 40-pound backpacks and climbed more than 10,000 feet, including a five-hour, 4,000-foot ascent of Mount Baldy, Philmont's highest mountain, with a summit at 12,400 feet. Troop 42 is sponsored by the United Methodist Church of Nevada.
