City Council to set election dates, consider several ordinances tonight

The Nevada City Council will be holding the first reading of an ordinance setting April 3 as the date for the 2012 city council election and Feb. 7, 2012, as the date for a primary if one is needed during tonight's meeting at 7 in the Public Safety Building, 120 S. Ash Street.

In addition to setting the election dates, the council has a lengthy agenda to cover tonight including the appointment of the initial seven board members for the city's Industrial Development Authority-Nevada Redevelopment Corporation and two ordinances and the accompanying public hearings for sewer easements for the extension of the city's sewer system into the Meadow Lane development in the southeast part of town.

The council will also be considering seven ordinances amending the city code to facilitate nuisance abatement actions.

The first amends the city code to allow the issuance of administrative search warrants to "inspect and/or enforce the city's housing, zoning, building, heath, safety, nuisance, dangerous building, and fire codes in order to abate unlawful conditions."

The second ordinance will allow the building official to obtain an administrative search warrant if he is refused entry into a suspected dangerous building.

The third ordinance will amend the city code to permit the city to request an administrative search warrant if they are refused entry, to abate a specified nuisance.

The fourth ordinance will allow the police chief or his representative to obtain an administrative search warrant to remove damaged or disabled vehicles or other junk, that has not been removed as ordered, from property where they have been refused entry.

The fifth ordinance will allow the city's code enforcement officer to obtain an administrative search warrant if he is refused entry to abate weeds and trash.

The sixth ordinance will allow the city to obtain an administrative search warrant to enforce the city's zoning regulations.

The seventh ordinance will amend the city code to give the city's municipal judge the power to issue administrative search warrants.

Other items on the agenda include an emergency ordinance to authorize a contract with the Missouri Division of Family Services for the Emergency Shelter Grant. The grant will support the operation of the Moss House and a request for a license to sell beer with an alcohol content up 5 percent for both Dollar General stores.

They will also be considering the second reading of an ordinance amending the city's natural gas inspection regulations and an ordinance allowing the city to prequalify professional architects, engineers and land surveyors registered in Missouri.
