Patty Lee Heckadon, 83, Fort Scott, Kan., passed away on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Mercy Health System, Fort Scott, following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 11, 1928, in Metz, Mo., to Thomas B. Handley Sr. and Gladess Olage Killion Handley.

She married John H. Heckadon on Jan. 24, 1947, in Pleasanton, Kan., and he preceded her in death on April 14, 2007.

Patty was born and raised in the Metz area. She graduated from Metz High School in 1945. She was a homemaker and also worked at the Metz School in the cafeteria for a number of years. She and her husband came to Nevada to live in 2000. Patty has lived in Fort Scott the past four years. She loved traveling, crocheting, and being with her family. Patty was a member of the Metz Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, John Heckadon, Grass Valley, Calif., and Jack Heckadon and his wife, Judy, Nevada, Mo.; two daughters, Brenda Zimmerman and her husband, Bill, Fort Scott, and Pam Ferris and her husband, Dwayne, Carl Junction, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one sister, June Ann Brewer and her husband, Harold, Horton, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Rosalee Handley, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Handley Jr. and Jim Bob Handley, and one son-in-law, Dan Vande Wynkel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Metz Methodist Church, Metz. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m., in National Cemetery, Fort Scott. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 7-8 p.m., Oct. 18, at Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada. Friends may call now and until 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
