Sunday fire destroys rural home: corrected

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

A home at 14316 Pawhuska Rd., south of Nevada, was destroyed by fire Sunday night, and firefighters were back at the home on Monday when the fire rekindled.

The Nevada Fire Department responded to the house fire at 10:38 p.m. on Sunday and "found a split level house with fire coming out the windows on the east end and the roof fully involved," a press release said.

Mutual aid was requested and the Milo, Compton Junction and Deerfield fire departments responded with manpower, equipment and water.

The Nevada Fire Department first attacked the blaze with three water lines, but all work had to be done from the outside of the structure because of the heavy fire conditions. No one was home at the time of the blaze and the structure was a total loss.

Firefighters were called back to the scene Monday morning. Most of the structure had collapsed, but because of the intensity of the fire there was a "hot spot" under one section of the collapsed material that had re-ignited.

According to an e-maill from Nevada Fire Chief Robert Benn, "It appeared to have been extinguished (no smoke or heat) but evidently a small hot spot continued to smolder" during the night until getting enough oxygen to flare up again early Monday morning. Mutual aid was requested from the Deerfield Fire Department and the blaze was put out. The fire was investigated by the Missouri Fire Marshal's office.
