CARL JUNCTION --The inability to contain dribble penetration on one end, along with a poor shooting night on the other end proved to be a tough combination to overcome for the Nevada High School boys basketball team.

Bubba Banes can't control a rebound, as it's knocked away out of bounds on Tuesday night at Carl Junction.

Carl Junction's guards attacked the rim again and again in a 79-68 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night. At the same time, Nevada's guards simply had an off-night from the perimeter.

"We shot it poorly, but you have to find a way to overcome it," Nevada Coach John McNeley said. "I just don't think we're getting an extreme effort like we need to. And we missed a lot of second and third opportunities."

McNeley also noted his team's defense was not up to par. From the start, the Bulldogs were able to score on drives to the hoop, either in transition, or by simply going one-on-one in a half-court set.

"The inability to contain the dribbler was key," McNeley said. "That led to easy attempts by them. But you have to hand it to them. They have three guards that are pretty good. We just have to do a better job defensively. And I tie that back to effort. Effort helps you overcome deficiencies. You have to have a great effort to play in this system."

Pushing the pace from the start, Carl Junction raced out to a 17-5 lead right away and never looked back.

"We talked about how it was important for us to get off to a good start on their floor and we just did not do that," McNeley said. "They dictated things and got in the driver's seat."

The Tigers stayed close, but trailed 37-28 at the half.

Led by its guards, the Bulldogs extended the lead to 15 in the third and then used a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter to push the lead past 20.

The Tigers didn't quit. Nevada scored 10-straight, but the Bulldogs still led 68-55 with 3:30 to play.

The visitors cut the lead to single digits with 1:26 to play, but the Bulldogs scored seven of the next nine to finish off the Tigers.

"Even when we got back in it, I never thought we played very well," McNeley noted. "If we shoot it as well as we did last week, we're probably right there with them. But we just didn't turn them over like we thought we could."

Senior Drew Bryson led the Tigers with 17 points, while Silas Smith scored 16 and Joseph Ferry added 13.

Travis Vogt led Carl Junction with 21 points.

Nevada falls to 2-2 on the season. Nevada's boys host Warrensburg on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. In Tuesday's JV boys contest, Carl Junction won 53-42.
