On My Own to host tai chi class

Friday, December 23, 2011

On My Own will host a Basic Tai Chi for Arthritis class in January and will continue its parent support group in the new year.

The class is based on the Sun Style Tai Chi. Tai chi for arthritis is easy to learn, effective and safe and requires no prior tai chi experience. The 12-movement tai chi is specially composed by a team of medical and tai chi experts. It increases flexibility, muscle strength, increases heart and lung activity, aligns posture, improves balance and integrates mind and body, a press release noted.

Step-by-step instructions will allow participants to set an individual pace and level. Thousands of people with arthritis have gained pain relief and better quality of life from practicing tai chi, the press release said. Classes begin Jan. 10.

The class will meet one time a week, Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m. The cost of the class, led by in Leslie Carroll-Bartlett, certified instructor, is $10 for the five-week session. Scholarships are available.

The next On My Own Parent Support Group will meet Tuesday, Jan. 17, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., in the On My Own, Inc. Conference Room. This group is designed for parents of children ages birth through young adult including young adults transitioning from high school into adulthood.

A variety of topics will be covered in the support group and parents will receive information, encouragement and support for each family's unique situation. Quality, on-site childcare will be offered free of charge, allowing parents to freely and fully participate, the press release said. This group is lead by Amanda Fisher, On My Own transition coordinator. Pre-registration is required by calling On My Own at (417) 667-7007.
