Students from Northeast Vernon County High School attended the 2011 Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America District Competition, Jan. 27, in Joplin. Students from Region 11 participated in several different competitive events.

The NEVC members competing were: Shelby Wilkins, Crystal Bogardus, Spencer Hoagland, Tori Stutzman, Jayce Vantellman, and Trenton Rader.

Local chapter advisor Laurie Bybee, Gina Naas, Erin Kitsmiller, Payton Hays and Bailee Bybee were room consultants in different events.

Shelby Wilkins, Crystal Bogardus and Spencer Hoagland all received gold medals and Shelby was chosen to compete on the state level.

Shelby's statebound effort was in the Recycle and Redesign event. In this individual event, students create a display about a fashion, home-related or other post-consumer item recycled into a new product. Students must create an entirely new product, not just embellish the existing product.

Crystal and Spencer worked as a team in Life Event Planning. Tori, Jayce and Trenton received silver medals. Their event was Food Innovation.

Emily Daniel, FCCLA regional president, shakes hands with Shelby Wilkins. Shelby won a gold medal at a Jan. 27 competion and will compete at the state level later this year.

FCCLA is unique among student organizations because projects and events are planned and run by its student members. This prime focus of Missouri FCCLA, youth-centered leadership, helps members develop those "skills for life such as planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision-making, and interpersonal communication -- skills that are necessary in the work place and in the home.
