Middle school teams win tourney openers

The Nevada Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team defeated McDonald County 46-30 on Tuesday at the Tri-County Tournament.

Matt Sommer scored 23 for Nevada and Patrick Ferry added 12.

Coach Robert Miner said his team will play a doubleheader tonight. Nevada plays Neosho at 5 p.m. in the semifinals. If the Tigers win, they'll play in the title game. If the team loses in the semis, they'll play for third.

The seventh grade tourney is being played in Webb City.

Nevada's eighth grade boys basketball team won its opening round game of the tournament on Tuesday by beating McDonald County 45-37.

Levi Palmer and Chaden Brandt scored 12 apiece. The team is now 6-6 and will play a doubleheader tonight.

Marty Atnip's Nevada team takes on number-one seed Neosho at 5. They'll play again immediately after the semifinal game, either for the championship or for third.

The eighth grade tourney is in Carthage.
