James was a lifelong resident of Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1973. He drove a truck for Pepsi Cola for several years, and also had worked for DAYCO in Fort Scott, Kan., and Heartland hospital in Nevada as a mental health worker. James was a member of the Nevada Eagles Aerie No. 3770, and he enjoyed carpentry, especially finish work.
Survivors include three children, Stacia Smith and companion, Aaron Deane, Nevada, Ryan Hilt, and Tyler Hilt, both of Springfield, Mo.; three grandsons, McKenzie, Tanner, and Micha; one sister, Jonalee Stanart, Nevada; and one niece and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
