Trivia nerds sought to benefit RFL
FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- Area residents who want to test their trivia knowledge and help the Bourbon County Relay for Life chapter have the perfect opportunity.
It will be time to dust off thinking caps when three local Relay for Life teams host "Nerd Search: Trivia Night" on Thursday, May 10, at the Liberty Theatre, 113 S. Main St.
Proceeds from the new event will benefit the Bourbon County Relay for Life chapter, which raises money for the American Cancer Society and its services.
Melissa Wise, captain of the Wise Owls Relay for Life team that is helping to organize the contest, is a Fort Scott native who recently moved back to the area from Detroit. She said she got the idea for a trivia night from a similar event held every week in a restaurant and bar in the Motor City.
"There would be teams of anywhere from one to 10 people," she said. "Someone would read questions on a microphone. There would be dinner, drinks and trivia in a nice environment. It was a lot of fun. We thought it would be great to do to raise money for Relay for Life."
There will be multiple rounds of play with random bonus questions offered throughout the evening. Bonus questions will be offered to teams that donate an additional $5 per bonus question.
The contest will include several trivia categories, including geography, weather, children's literature, pop culture, music and movies, and a few others.
Teams of four will answer questions that will be read and also appear on a big screen. They will write their answers down, and answer sheets will be graded after each round. The team with the highest score at the end of the contest will be declared the winner and members will receive prizes.
Wise said there is no limit on the number of teams that can participate. Registration is $10 per person and must be completed by Tuesday, May 8, or the cost will increase to $15 per person. Registration ends at 6:15 p.m. the night of the contest.
Wise said organizers are hoping to attract 500 competitors.
Refreshments such as soda, water, hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, pizza, chips and candy will be available for sale. The Liberty Theatre bar will be open for the sale of adult beverages including mixed drinks, wine and beer.
All funds raised from registration fees, the sale of bonus questions and concessions will directly benefit the Bourbon County Relay for Life chapter.
Contestants must be 12 years of age or older and are encouraged to dress in their best "nerd" attire, a news release said.
Other teams assisting with trivia night are the After Affect Salon and The Findley Factor. Wise said money raised at the event will be spread out among the three teams and go toward their fundraising goals.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the game begins at 6:30 p.m. To register, contact Wise at (620) 215-0678, or Jared Leek at 224-9787.
