Faithful gather on courthouse lawn

Dan Gayman (right) of Schell City, Mo., tells a group of Nevada and Vernon County residents that they live in "one of the very few countries in the world that would designate a day for prayer" during the opening moments of the National Day of Prayer held on the south side of the Vernon County Courthouse at noon on Thursday. About 100 people converged on the Square to oberve the day for the fourth year in a row. According to Gray Clark, also of Schell City, the county commission and community have been very supportive of the event. Clark also said that this year everyone attending the event was given a program so they could follow along with the readings and keep track of what was happening. The National Day of Prayer this year opened with the blowing of a trumpet, which was actually the spiral horn of a greater kudu, a species of antelope native to Africa. The Church of Israel brass band played "America the Beautiful" and the entire group said the "Pledge of Allegiance." Clergymen from several local churches spoke and prayed and "The Star Spangled Banner" was sung in unison between prayers and readings by pastors and ministers of different congregations. The event closed with music and song, before the lunch hour was over.
