Edoline Lois Smith

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Edoline Lois Smith, 96, Nevada, passed away quietly on June 2, 2012, at Christian Heath Care Center, in Nevada. She was born on April 3, 1917, in Lamar, the eldest child of Hazel (Orahood) and Ray Denton Brous.

Edoline grew up on the family farm south of Lamar, often talking about the 160 acres, threshing time, cows and riding horses. She attended Rocky Mound rural school and graduated from Lamar High School in 1935. After attending Teachers College in Springfield, Mo., she taught at Victory Consolidated School until meeting the love of her life, Cecil D. Smith. On May 2, 1937, they were married in Nevada and moved to the Chicago, Ill., area. In 1949, Edoline and Cecil returned to Nevada, making it their home for the remainder of their lives. Edoline worked at Moore's Department Store for a brief time until she became a caseworker for Vernon County Welfare Office. She stayed with that job for 19 years, until her retirement. Cecil and Edoline took their travel trailer all over the United States, stopping to see friends, visiting relatives, going on travel trailer caravans, golfing and enjoying their 69-plus years together to the fullest. Edoline will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, rarely forgetting a birthday or anniversary, kindness to others and her hospitality.

Edoline belonged to Domestic Science Federated Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi, the United Methodist Church, Nevada Country Club, Christian Women's Club, Red Hat Society, Nevada Garden Club and Widows Club. She took great joy from her knitting, making booties, sweaters and hats for all the newest babies of friends and family. She was always ready to go at a moment's notice.

She is survived by her children, Ron Smith, Nevada, and Bonnie Teel, Rich Hill; grandchildren, Shelly Adams and husband, Dave, Blue Springs, Mo., Jeff Smith and wife, Amy, Nevada, Terri Teel and Derik Frioud, Denver, Colo., and Beth Galante and husband, Scott, New Orleans, La.; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Hillary Adams, Dillon and Cooper Smith, Margaret Galante, Grayson McDonald, and Augustin Frioud; brother, Gary Brous and wife, Shirley, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; sister-in-law, Pauline Brous of Liberal, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and close friends. Edoline and Cecil had two foster daughters as well as "adopted" Cottey girls. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cecil D. Smith on Dec. 8, 2003; daughter-in-law, Suzy Smith; son-in-law, Fred Teel; her sister, Irene Bound; and brothers, Rex Brous and Jack Brous.

A memorial service will celebrate Edoline's life at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Rod Kelley officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service. A committal service will follow at Moore Cemetery in Nevada. Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the United Methodist Church, 500 S. College, Nevada, in Edoline's memory.
