Fly away -- anywhere but Nevada
Canada geese at Izaac Walton Park run for the safety of the lake after Nevada Parks Maintenance Supervisor Mark Moberly throws an explosive wildlife deterrant device toward the birds on Wednesday, June 20. All of the geese went to the water but did not leave the park. The parks department wants to discourage the birds from using the lakes and ponds on city property. The geese leave feathers and droppings everywhere. They eat the grass down so far it damages the plant and consume shoreline plants that help minimize erosion. Excessive droppings in the lake create an abundance of nutrients that encourage undesirable species of plant growth which robs the water of oxygen that is needed by the fish in the lake, according to Moberly. Several options for keeping the birds away have been discussed and the city's efforts will continue.
