HOLDEN -- The Nevada Red Sox AA American Legion baseball team pounded out 15 hits in a 14-12 victory over Holden on Monday night in the first round of the district tournament.

Fourth-seeded Nevada advanced in the tourney with the win over third-seeded Holden.

"It was a great team effort," Red Sox Coach Jerrod Alexander said. "We got down early, but the kids showed some intestinal fortitude and battled back. They really stepped up nicely and swung the bats well. We got a lot of big hits when we needed them."

Everyone contributed nicely to the victory for the Red Sox. Andy Heathman had three hits and scored twice, while Kason Schwalm scored four runs, and drove in three runs on one hit. Kyler Cliffman had three hits (two doubles) and scored three times, Taylor Highfill had four RBIs on two hits, Taylor Manes reached base five times, with three hits (two doubles) and three RBIs.

Brett Mitchell chipped in one RBI, Clay Regers had a double, Tanner Handly scored a run and Tristan Smith had one hit and scored once.

Handly started the game on the mound and allowed four earned runs in three and a third. Regers went three innings on the mound, striking out four. He allowed two runs and got the win on the mound. Cliffman got the save.

Nevada will take on number-one seeded Clinton Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. in Holden. The Red Sox lost to Clinton in walk-off fashion earlier this season.

"We can play with them," Alexander said. "Taylor Manes will be on the bump. We'll see what happens."
