Getting ready for the sale

I looked at my date book and realized that our church's basement sale is only a week away. Sure, I have known this for over a year, since we regularly have a basement sale early in September for the benefit of Habitat for Humanity. I am very proud of that sale since I have been involved in various ways with Habitat for Humanity even before it became an active program here in Vernon County. I love the fact that many churches combine in this effort to provide suitable housing in our area. For example, the First Christian Church offers their educational building for the monthly potato luncheon for the benefit of Habitat for Humanity. Other churches have their special ways of cooperating, in addition to having many members who actually work on the board of directors or with hammer and nails on Saturdays.

The United Methodist Church has chosen to have their fall basement sale be part of its contribution to the program. Since we know that the other participating churches will also be donating items to the sale, we want to be sure that our own members also clean out their closets, drawers and garages to donate clothes, furniture, toys, books, or whatever, to make this a really big sale. The sale will be held Friday, Sept. 7 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and until noon on the next day, Saturday, Sept. 8. But the donations are to be brought in to the Fellowship Hall all through the week, In fact, the volunteers who work at the sale hope that most of the donations will come early in the week.

That's where my problems come in. I don't have my "stuff collected yet. Until this week it has been so hot that I couldn't think about wanting to donate coats and sweaters, or even going into their hiding places to find what I can part with. I have gone to Adrian several times in recent weeks and have been influenced by the sign near the town entrance that says, "Procrastinate Now. Don't Put It Off!" I find it easy to obey that admonition.

But it can't be put off any longer. There is a matter of pride here. I don't want to walk in with a small plastic bag of things to donate when I see my church members working through nice piles of things others have brought. I need to do my part,

Even though it was very hot and dry this summer, somehow there has been enough moisture to have caused some of my clothes to shrink enough that they are now too small for me to wear. Some of my last winter's wardrobe can now be donated. But maybe there is still a chance that I will lose enough weight that I can still get into that dark blue suit. Or even maybe the black slacks that don't need any ironing should be kept for possible future downsizing. I'll go look at the coats instead.

Maybe if I get rid of this pink bulky coat that is so warm I can find a similar one at the sale to buy. I really like the shorter coats better now anyway. Marge Holznagle is in charge of this sale and in the past she has often picked out something she saw being donated that she thought I might like to buy. That would work out fine for me. Also bulky coats make the bags look more impressive when you are taking in donations. And we need customers or there would be no sense in donating in the first place.

I do have so many socks that I can't close my socks' drawer. If I get rid of some of them I know I will probably get some more at Christmas because that seems to be a very welcome gift from grandchildren. Some of the old ones will go in the bag for the sale for sure. And I will keep looking.

I hope I'll see some of you at the sale, either working or buying. But if you notice me sorting through the coats, don't assume I am just straightening them up. I'm looking for your last winter's coat that is now too big for you since you started your diet.
