Nevada City Council holds work session and council meeting Tuesday

Saturday, January 5, 2013

The Nevada City Council will hold a special work session Tuesday at 6 p.m. to discuss the city's 2013 street construction projects, followed by the regular council meeting at 7 in the council chambers in the Public Safety Building, 120 S. Ash St.

Tuesday's meeting moved a week later than usual because New Year's Day was the first Tuesday of the month.

Among the items on the council's agenda will be a presentation by the city's architect for the new public safety building.

The council will also be holding the first reading of the first reading of an ordinance amending the city's contract with Sproul's Construction, Lamar, for the Safe School's Sidewalk Project.

They will also be holding the first reading of a special ordinance approving a change order to the city's contract with Emery Sapp & Son, Columbia, for the reconstruction of the parking apron and connecting taxiway at the Nevada Municipal Airport, and the first reading of a special ordinance amending the city's 2012 annual budget as approved by Ordinance No. 7773,

Other items on the agenda are the final reading of a memorandum of agreement with Alliance Water Resources and the second reading of a general ordinance amending Chapter 3 of the city code to allow the manufacture of wine or brandy in the city limits.

I hope all Nevada taxpayers take the time to go to the city's website and review their 2013 budget. I don't know how they can justify what they spend in some departments for a town of about 8,000 people. It's also hard to believe the taxpayers have put up with it for this long or they can be expected to put up with it for much longer.

When you attended the budget work sessions the council held how did they justify this over spending? It's really easy to look at a piece of paper and say it shouldn't be when actually those of us who did not attend the meetings and listen to the justification by the department heads shouldn't comment in a negative mannor.

This is what I don't understand. I would wager, you never even glanced at the budget, more less read it item by item. We spent two hours going through it line by line. After you do this, I'm sure you will know what we are talking about. If not, then I don't know what to tell you.

FYI I have gone over the city budget. I am a numbers person so I look at the city and county budgets when they become available. I will say there are things that I don't understand (on both) but I don't second guess their decisions. I don't have the time to attend the meetings so I don't know what discussion and justification is offered for the items I would question. The difference in you and I is I see the glass half full. Just because I am curious, have you looked at the budgets for cities compariable in size to Nevada?
