Lady Panthers earn second win

APPLETON CITY, Mo. -- The Lady Panthers of Sheldon High School got their second win of the season Tuesday night when they defeated the Lady Hornets of Hume by a final score of 44-26 in the Appleton City Tournament.

The Lady Panthers never trailed, opening up a 12-7 lead after the opening quarter that only got bigger as the minutes wore on. The Lady Panthers had double-digit scoring efforts in all four quarters, while the Lady Hornets failed to break into double figures in a quarter all night.

Emily Laning and Jessica Rawlings led the offensive effort for the Lady Panthers as they finished the night with 11 points apiece, followed by Alesha Laning with nine, Destiny Shelton with seven, Dani Hibbits with four and Logan Lamb with two. Abby Yarick led the Lady Hornets with eight points, followed by Kaitlee Metcalf and Megan Sutcliffe with seven, Hope Yarick with three and Tori Sears with one.

Sutcliffe led the Lady Hornets with 12 rebounds, while Metcalf added a team-high seven assists.

The Lady Panthers shot just 13-for-26 from the free-throw line in the contest, but Lady Hornets were unable to take advantage of those struggles after a 3-for-11 performance of their own.

The Lady Hornets will be back in action when pool play resumes today, taking on Montrose at 4:30 p.m., while the Lady Panthers are set to take the floor at 9 p.m.
