The Nevada Tigers took the third-place trophy in the first Kansas National Guard Invitational boys tournament Saturday afternoon with a 63-53 win over Riverton, Kan.
After 10 ties and 17 lead changes, the game came down to the fourth quarter. With the Tigers ahead, 49-47, and 3 minutes left in the game, senior Jamin Brandt ignited the Tigers and the crowd with back-to-back slam dunks to give Nevada a 53-47 lead.
The Tigers sealed the victory at the free throw line.
Senior Silas Smith led Nevada with 26 points, including a 15-for-16 performance at the charity stripe and 10-for-10 down the stretch. Smith made the all-tournament team by averaging 25 points per game in the three games.
Brandt joined Smith in double figures with 17 points and Grant Wolfe chipped in 10. Landon North led the Rams with 16 points.
Nevada is 8-6 and headed for their second tournament in two weeks as the No. 2 seed in the 88th annual Clinton, Mo., Tournament. The Tigers are to play El Dorado Springs at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the first round.
