Vernon County deputies and detention officers transported a group of inmates to the County fairgrounds Thursday afternoon and stood guard as the inmates picked up trash and debris on both sides of Centenial Boulevard from the fairgrounds to Austin and collected more than five large bags of trash.

Thursday was the first "inmate work day" that will become a weekly routine.

"No more sitting in jail and lying around all day" said Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher. "Everyone else has to work and going to jail shouldn't be an exception to that."

Mosher also said that he was pleased that all of the inmate workers who were brought out for last Thursday's work detail volunteered for the assignment. Mosher said he plans to have a work detail every week to help pick up trash and debris from local parks and alongside streets throughout the county, including the smaller towns.
