The theme of this year's Bushwhacker Days is 1863-2013 "Out of the Ashes," which recognizes the 150th anniversary of the burning of Nevada. To kick off the annual celebration, the Bushwhacker Days Royalty Pageant Committee and the Elizabeth Carey Chapter DAR are accepting applications for the 2013 Bushwhacker Days Royalty Contest.

Applications for candidates are available online at the Bushwhacker Days website, www.bwdays.com, at Mays Floral or at the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce.

Candidate applications are due by April 26 with the Royalty Judging Tea Party set for May 18. Coronation will be June 5.

Little Miss Bushwhacker Allsion Olson

Candidates will be crowned in four categories: Queen, age 18 or older; Princess, ages 14-17; Junior Miss, ages 10-13; and Little Miss, ages 5-10.

Candidates are asked to dress in period costume, but the judging will be entirely on the interview questions at the judging tea. Candidates should be prepared to answer questions about the history of Nevada and Vernon County during the Missouri-Kansas Border War and Civil War from the years of 1859-1865 and the dress of that period.

Emphasis will be on the burning of Nevada and the role of the Bushwhackers during that time.

Junior Miss Bushwhacker Rylee Wingert

Last year's contest resulted in the retention of the 2011 Queen, Michelle Branham, No candidates registered in the queen category. The 2012 Princess was Madison Gordon; Junior Miss, Rylee Wingert and Little Miss, Allison Olson.

The committee hopes for more candidates to participate in this year's contest.
