Nevada Tigers tennis fares well at Fort Scott

FORT SCOTT -- The Nevada Tigers tennis team played what head coach Clay Wheeler called "a great day of tennis," on its way to a second-place finish in the Fort Scott Invitational Monday.

The Tigers competed against three other teams, all from Kansas; Fort Scott, Pittsburg, and Coffeyville. All six varsity players earned second-place medals.

In the No. 1 singles matches, Andrew Arneson lost to Hank Cloninger, of Pittsburg, then defeated Chris Frazier, of Coffeyville, and Jesse Guerreo, of Fort Scott. In the No. 2 singles matches, Sam McCoy lost to Adrian McAfee, of Pittsburg, then defeated Tyler Strickland, of Coffeyville, and D.J. Blethen, of Fort Scott. The No. 1 doubles team of Colton Short and Andrei Ziabchenko lost to Pittsburg's Jake Creech and Logan Benham, then defeated Coffeyville's Wyatt Starnes and Ben Conn and Fort Scott's Davis Drake and Gage Addington. The No. 2 team of Skyler Laning and Skyler Crews lost to Pittsburg's Micah Hashman and Nic Powers, then defeated Coffeyville's Kevin Bailey and Matthew Countryman and Fort Scott's Hayden Barr and Alex Combs.

The Tigers finished with eight points as a team. Pittsburg took the win with 12, Fort Scott was third with three and Coffeyville finished fourth with one point.

Next on the schedule for the Tigers is Wednesday, at the Bolivar tournament.
