Nevada High School Wall of Fame inductees announced

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Nevada High School athletic director Kevin McKinley announced via email Tuesday afternoon that the Nevada High School Wall of Fame will have three more inductees in its 2013 class. Those new inductees come from the Class of 1977 and 1990 in Bill Jones, Kevin Williams and Matt Ketterman.

Jones was a multi-sport athlete who was a standout on the Tigers football and basketball teams, as well as a successful track athlete. Jones was the place kicker for the Tigers football team who kicked the game-winning field goal to send Nevada to the State Championship game in 1975 under then-head coach Shane Cavanah.

Jones earned All-District and All-Conference honors in football and was a high school All-American track star. Jones went on to become a multi-sport athlete in college, playing baseball, football, basketball and running track, receiving All-Conference honors at the junior college level.

As a star of the Tigers basketball team, Jones scored 47 points in a single game before the advent of the 3-point line, finished with 504 points in a single season and is a member of the 1,000 career points club with 1,032 points. He earned All-Conference honors twice and All-District once and is among the all-time leaders in scoring, games played and games won.

Jones' playing days came to an end in college at Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va.

Kevin Williams graduated in the Class of 1977, alongside Jones and was yet another standout on the Tigers basketball team. Williams was a multi-year All-District, All-Conference and All-State selection and is in the top 10 on the Nevada High School all-time scoring list.

Williams was a part of the McDonald's All-America Top 60 his senior year and still holds the Missouri state record for blocked shots in a single game. He set the record on Feb. 15, 1977, when he blocked 20 shots in Nevada's game against Mount Vernon High School, according to records obtained from mshsaa.org.

Matt Ketterman was a 1990 graduate from Nevada High School and was a multi-sport athlete, earning multiple All-District, All-Area and All-Conference selections in baseball and basketball. He earned a spot on the All-State basketball team once and finished his career with 1,122 points -- the seventh-best total in Nevada High School history.

Ketterman earned All-Conference baseball honors three times, as well as All-Area and All-District twice. After high school, he went on to play at Labette County Community College, where he was named to the All-Region team his sophomore year when he hit .389 with 48 RBIs and was in the top 10 in the nation in home runs with 16.

Ketterman went on to play his junior season at Kansas State University before finishing his college career at Northeastern State University, in Talequah, Okla. In his senior year, Ketterman was in the top 10 in NCAA Division II in batting average and was a member of the Nevada Griffons in 1993.

McKinley said Jones, Ketterman and Williams are to be inducted into the Wall of Fame during the 2013-14 school year. A specific date and time for the induction ceremony is to be announced at a later date.
