Relay for Life strikes emotional chord

Saturday, July 13, 2013

Few community events are as meaningful as the Relay for Life. The annual event is held both as a remembrance of loved ones who have lost their fight to cancer, and to honor and salute those who are cancer survivors and those who are still fighting.

The relay also seeks to honor the caregivers who themselves commit so much in helping others.

There aren't many of us who haven't been touched by this disease, either within our family or among our friends and neighbors.

The event itself is filled with fellowship and camaraderie as participants take part in a team relay walk throughout the evening and night, all serving as a fundraiser to help the American Cancer Society's research and local efforts in combating the disease and helping those who struggle with this.

Food, games, music and different activities are part of the evening.

The Relay for Life is a way for everyone to be a part of something greater.

It's hard not to be moved during the event, particularly when thoughts drift to those who aren't with us.

It's equally hard not to be emotional in viewing the courage of those who have survived or are continuing their struggle with cancer.

Each year, the goal is to surpass the previous year's effort, both in participation and in the dollars raised.

While this year's Relay has ended, planning and preparation for next year is already underway.

Donations are appreciated. Participation is meaningful.

Do what you can. It's something you will always remember.
