Two young Nevada golfers were part of the Joplin team Thursday in the Smith-Horton Juniors competition on the Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course, in Springfield.

The Springfield team defeated Joplin, 13.5-4.5. Patrick Ferry defeated Caleb Abalos, 5-3, in his singles match, but Johnny Quitno suffered a 3-1 loss to Dylan Bekemeier -- the 2012 Missouri Class 3 State Champion.

Ferry and Quitno also played Abalos and Bekemeier in a four-ball match and suffered a 5-3 loss.

"Overall, a great showing and excellent experience for these two incoming freshmen golfers," Nevada High School head boys' and girls' golf coach Brian Leonard said.

Ferry was second with 245 points and Quitno 22nd with 56 in the boys' 13-15 division overall tour standings. Bronson Smith -- who will be a seventh grader at Nevada Middle School in the 2013-14 school year -- finished just outside the top four in fifth with 264 points in the boys' 10-12 division and Hannah Householder, Milo, was a distant first in the girls' 16-18 division with 346 points.

Sam Holmes was a distant first in the boys' 13-15 division with 390 points -- 145 points ahead of Ferry -- while Gregory Mitchals was atop the 10-12 division with 345 points, followed closely by Trey Smith at 334, Landon Rothgeb at 324.5, Lucas Ogden at 298 and Smith.
