Following Monday night's board of aldermen meeting, Bronaugh residents will need to keep their grass cut to 8 inches in height or less, or find themselves in violation of a new ordinance approved unanimously by the board.

According to the ordinance, which replaced one passed last year, properties with grass and weeds exceeding 8-inches will be notified by certified mail, hand delivery, or property posting.

The ordinance also set penalties for accumulations of trash. Property owners will have five days after they are notified to bring the property into compliance or request a hearing.

The hearing will cost $50 and will be refunded if the owner is found in compliance.

If the owner doesn't comply in five days, the city will mow the property, transfer the cost to the property owner, and charge a $55 administrative fee and a $25 fine for the first violation. The second violation will have a fine of $35, and the third will have a fine of $45.

"If the land is taxed as agriculture, we can't force them to keep it at this height," Mayor Sherry Brown reminded the aldermen.

The board of aldermen also passed two additional ordinances regarding the water improvement project, which will include an aerator. They passed the engineering contract with Bartlett & West and legal contract with Bill McCaffrey.

"The state needs information from Bartlett & West, and Bartlett & West needs a contract with us," Brown explained. "The agreement states we are signing this contract contingent on getting the $100,000 loan. When we sign this, they will submit the plans for the project to the state. The state will then look at our plans and then determine if we get the loan."

William McCaffrey, Nevada, will provide legal services to the city necessary to the completion of the water project for a sum not to exceed $10,000.

The board also held a public hearing and voted unanimously to keep Bronaugh's property tax rate at 0.4972 per $100 assessed valuation.

In other business the board:

* Voted unanimously to sell bulk water at $8 per 1,000 gallons, an increase from $5.50.

* Voted unanimously to close the north 157 feet of Oak street.

* Voted unanimously to approve increasing the government miscellaneous fund from $1,000 to $3,000 and the sewer-miscellaneous fund from $300 to $1,000.

* Heard the city's financial report showing the general fund lost $495, the water fund gained $663 and the sewer fund lost $2,244.

The next Bronaugh board of aldermen meeting will be 7 p.m. Sept. 9.
