This young man gives the judge a thumbs up before beginning his pulling effort during the pedal tractor pull contest held on Saturday afternoon, August 18 at the 2012 Sheldon Old Settlers Picnic, in Sheldon Mo.

The 109th Sheldon Old Settlers' Picnic kicks off with favorites like the ice cream social and golf cart obstacle course Aug. 15.

This year a display highlighting the history of Sheldon and an adult Queen divison will be new additions to the Picnic's music and entertainment.

"I hope for the Picnic to be a success," co-president Charity Fowler Ogle said. "There are several townspeople that have never missed, as in 80 plus years of never missing a picnic."

This young lady tries her luck on the mechanical bull during the 2012 Sheldon old Settlers Picnic activities held in the city park on Saturday August, 18. Riders of all ages enjoed the challenge of trying to keep from getting thrown.

Ogle remembered a saying of her father about attending.

"My dad always says you're not grown up yet, until you miss a Picnic, with that being said my dad has only missed two Picnics in his lifetime. So, I guess you can say I'm not grown up yet, because I haven't missed one yet!" she said.

Ogle said putting together this year's picnic with only four officers was very difficult.

"Help is needed to continue," she said. "If we don't have help next year, we probably won't have the Picnic."

She said the Picnic is good family fun and a time to reconnect.

"I remember having a large family reunion on the Sunday after the Picnic for many years ... everyone always came home. It's a small town event, and its roots run deep. Whatever your choice of activity is, you're sure to find something that you like at the Picnic," she said.

Dorothy Walker is the 2013 Grand Marshal. Old settlers' picnic officers are presidents Charity Ogle and Cody Claflin, vice president Perry Fowler, secretary Melinda Strom, and treasurer Cassie Boultinghouse.
