'A Bad Year for Tomatoes' latest CCPA production

Thursday, November 7, 2013

The Community Council on the Performing Arts will present "A Bad Year for Tomatoes" at 8 p.m., Nov. 14-16, and at 2 p.m., Nov. 17, at the Fox Playhouse, 110 S. Main, Nevada.

"Fed up with the pressures and demands of her acting career, the famous Myra Marlowe leases a house in the tiny New England hamlet of Beaver Haven and settles down to write her autobiography," begins the synopsis of the play, according to a press release from the CCPA.

"She is successful in turning aside the offers pressed on her by her long-time agent, but dealing with her nosy neighbors is a different matter.

"In an attempt to shoo them away, and gain some privacy, Myra invents a mad, homicidal sister -- who is kept locked in an upstairs room, but who occasionally escapes long enough to scare off uninvited visitors.

"The ruse works well, at first, but complications result when the local handyman develops a crush on "Sister Sadie" (really Myra in a wig) and the nosy, neighbor ladies decide it is their Christian duty to save the poor demented Sadie's soul.

"In desperation, Myra announces that her imaginary sibling has suddenly gone off to Boston -- which brings on the sheriff and the suspicion of murder."

Director Jane Ann Hancock said, "This is a light comedy filled with unique characters. The actors have worked hard to develop their stage personalities.

"There is a privacy-craved actress, her love-nagging agent, two gossiping neighbors (one who's an alcoholic and the other a 'Betty Crocker'), an occult practicing neighbor, the local skunk-trapping town character, and the aggressive sheriff.

"Put all these characters together and it's never a dull moment in the small community of Beaver Haven."

The comedy stars Kim Bessey, Linda Davidson, Ashley DeSpain, Chris Mosbrucker, Ricci Wood, Kenny Jones, and Mike Seitz.

The performance is sponsored by Dr. Sean and Mrs. Erika Gravely. Tickets ($7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens) will be available the night of the performance.
