OAK GROVE, Mo. -- The Nevada High School boys' golf team didn't open the season in the best of conditions, but that didn't seem to matter much as all five of head coach Brian Leonard's varsity golfers finished in the top 11, individually, helping the Tigers take first place in the eight-team tournament.

"I am proud of all the boys," Leonard said. "The weather was rough, but they really fought through the weather -- which included 20-25 mph wind with gusts up to 35 mph, at times -- and by the scores they shot, they were victorious over the weather."

The Tigers won the tournament with a combined score of 324, eight strokes ahead of second place, Pleasant Hill. Harrisonville was third, followed by Grandview, O'Hara, Odessa and Oak Grove.

Junior Andrew Quitno led the way for the Tigers as he finished second overall, with a 5-over-par 77 and was followed by his freshman brother, John, in fourth with an 80. Freshmen Patrick Ferry and Jacob Hammontree followed right behind at 83 and 84, respectively.

Sophomore Levi Palmer tied for 11th with what Leonard called "a good score of 85."

Junior Daxtyn Hiestand competed on the junior varsity side and had what Leonard called "an outstanding round of 87" to finish in second place. Senior Keegan Bell struggled to finish with an 98.

"He will regroup and get his scores down to where they were last season," Leonard said of Bell.

Boonville's Brett Windsor edge Andrew Quitno by just five strokes to take the individual title, with a 72.

Next on the schedule for the Tigers is Monday, when they compete in the Miami Invitational, at Peoria Ridge Golf Course. Tee times in that tournament are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
