Comets softball drops road pair

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. -- The Independence Community College Lady Pirates swept a softball doubleheader from the Cottey Comets Sunday, by the final scores of 29-0 and 24-2.

The first of the two contests was a lesson in futility for the Comets as Lady Pirates pitchers Taylor Eaves and Caitlin Caswell combined to shut out the Comets not only in runs, but hits, as well. The two combined for two walks and seven strikeouts in five scoreless innings.

The Comets, on the other hand, allowed a total of 31 hits in the contest and committed six errors. Christine Nevins and Shirley Arreola-Kern also combined to allow a total of eight walks.

The second of the two contests was better for the Comets, but not by much. In the nightcap, the Comets allowed a combined total of 24 runs on 14 hits with 13 walks.

The Comets' offense was finally able to get on the board in the fifth inning of the second game, however, plating a pair of runs. By the time all was said and done, those were the only two runs head coach Shelli Stanley's Comets were able to put up on the day, as they finished the contest with just three hits.

With Sunday's wins, the Lady Pirates are 26-12 this spring, while the Comets are winless in 14 games. Cottey is scheduled to visit St. Louis, Mo., Saturday, for a twinbill against the Lady Archers of St. Louis Community College.
