Viola Mae Devore

Viola Mae Devore, 95, passed away on July 21, 2014, at the Ottawa Retirement Village, in Ottawa, Kan., where she had lived the past 11 years. She was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Joplin, Mo., to Earl Lee Harris and Sarah Elva (Edwards) Harris. She was a 1937 graduate of Nevada High School and most of her life was spent as a resident of Nevada, Mo. She married L.L. (Roy) Devore on June 1, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1984.

She was a longtime member of the Pine Street Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Does Auxiliary of Elks Lodge No. 564. She worked more than 20 years in the laundry at the Nevada State Hospital, retiring in 1981.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, two brothers and her husband. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Maridee (Kelso) Devore, of Ottawa, Kan.; a granddaughter and her family, Laura and Greg Swearngin and great-grandson, Landon, of Ozark, Mo.; and a grandson and his family, Steven Devore and great-grandsons, Kyle and Parker, of Lawrence, Kan.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, at Newton Burial Park, in Nevada. Services are provided by Konantz-Warden Funeral Home, of Lamar, Mo.
