William R. "Bill" Woods

William R. "Bill" Woods, of Independence, Mo., born March 29, 1933, in Nevada, Mo., passed away Sept. 6, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House, in Kansas City, Mo. Bill graduated from Nevada High School at the age of 16, joined the army in 1950 and spent his "18th birthday in a foxhole in Korea." He survived the experience, became a member of American Legion post 21, and on May 30, 1957, married Alice "Lou" Rouse.

Bill worked in the space program at Benson Mfg. and then at Smith & Loveless, Inc. where he retired from Contracts Management after 25 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, sportsman, craftsman, coach and community activist.

In addition to Lou, his wife of 57 years, Bill will be remembered by his two sisters, Beverly Hartman, of Independence, Mo., and Barbara Agnew, of Wichita, Kan.; his six children, Derrek, Tracy, Melody, Carlea (David McAvoy), Sandee and Cheri; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; extended family; and a host of friends from Strike 'N Spare, Teetering Rocks Golf Club and Fit For Life.

Kansas City Hospice House provided exceptional service and support, and the family suggests contributions there in lieu of flowers. 


A service celebrating Bill's life will be held Sunday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m., at American Legion post 21, located at 16701 E. U.S. Highway 40, Independence, Mo., 64055.
