Ralph Pokorny/Daily Mail/ Nevada's Alexis Leighty tries for two in Monday's game with the Carthage Lady Tigers at the Franklin P. Norman City/County Community Center.

The Nevada Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball team improved to 7-1 on the season with a 46-5 home victory over Carthage, Monday night.

Tigers point guard Calli Beshore led Nevada in scoring with 14 points, followed by Jadeann Highley who added 10.

"As the game progressed, we did a nice job of moving the ball, looking into our posts who worked hard to get open," Nevada head coach Danny Penn said. "Jadeann did a great job of playing under control offensively."

Penn said he was pleased with the results of his team's full court press.

"We did a good job of getting turnovers with our full-court press early and converting into layups and easy points," he said.

However, Penn does see room for improvement.

"I thought we got a little lazy in the second half in terms of playing defense with our feet," he said. "We allowed their ballhandler to split our trap a couple times and made ourselves vulnerable near the basket. Those are things we need to clear up before our end of season tournament."

The NMS seventh-grade girls B-team ran away with a 40-2 win.

The B-team (5-1) was led by Lindsay Phebus and Lindley Ferry, with both scoring 13 points apiece.

"We did a nice job of crashing the offensive glass and getting some points off offensive rebounds.," Penn said. "We also did a nice job of executing our inbound plays and got some easy points there."

Eighth-grade girls

A much improved NMS eighth-grade girls suffered a tough defeat, losing to Carthage Monday night 13-12.

Carthage scored the go-ahead bucket with just under 10 seconds remaining in the game.
