'Sluggish' Comets come up short against Allen County

Thursday, November 27, 2014

Cottey's Comets suffered their second loss of the year Tuesday, falling to host Allen County 91-84.

Allen County built a 41-29 halftime lead, and although the visitors outscored the Red Devils in the second half, Cottey couldn't make up the difference.

Cottey had the edge on the boards, with a 44-42 difference, and enjoyed a 17-11 edge in second chance points.

Both teams converted 18 points from three-point range.

The Comets though, made just 37.9 percent of their shots from the field in the first half and just one of seven from three-point range, to go with a 6 of 13 mark at the free throw line.

They picked up in the second half, converting 17 of 35 from the field for 48.6 percent and 5 of 13 from three-point range, to go with 16 of 21 at the line.

"We were down 20 with 10 something left to play," noted Cottey Coach Stephanie Beason. "We got it within 2 with 20 something seconds left and couldn't convert the shot. We had to start fouling.

"I'm not very happy with our lack of effort tonight. We were very sluggish and only played with energy and emotion for the last 11 minutes of the game, which is also the time we caught up from a 20-point deficit.

"We were able to get great wins over the weekend. "Unfortunately, we couldn't top that off with another going into Thanksgiving break.

"With us, it's all about emotion and energy. When we're playing with it, we're pretty good and hard to beat. But when we're not, we're a whole other team."

Sophomore Linsey Denney led Cottey with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Emily Allen added 18 points, Latasha Griggs 15 points and 8 rebounds, sophomore Alyssa Jones 11 points, and sophomore Machela VanGennip 10 points and eight rebounds. Rose Sydney contributed six points.

Cottey lost three players on fouls -- Allen, Amalia Harris and Denney.

Cottey returns to action Dec. 2, at Ottawa, Kan.
