The Nevada Middle School wrestling team hosted their final home match of the season on Tuesday night, a tri-match also featuring Carl Junction and Seneca.

Nevada wrestling coach Robert Watts said he was happy with his team's performance.

"We wrestled really well," Watts said. "We're starting to put together things that we've been working on in practice. We're starting to see them try things that are new to them. And sometimes they're successful and sometimes they're not. But at least they're trying."

Watts said at the middle school level, he preaches the importance of wrestling fundamentals.

"As long as we are getting the basics in, that's what they need," he said. "All the kids are at different points in their careers. Some have been wrestling for five, six years...other kids, that's their third time on a mat, so they're brand new to it.

'So one kid could get pinned every time ---- but every time he comes off the mat, he's that much better."

Watts said his team has come a long way since the first meet of the season.

"We're wrestling a lot smarter," he said. "Each of them have their own things that they're better at. And they're really working in practice to hone those skills to make them more crisp."

Watts said numbers for the eighth-grade class were robust, while numbers for the seventh-grade class were "small."

"The eighth-grade group looks really good," he said.

Watts said Nevada High School assistant wrestling coach Josh Smith gave his team a pep talk prior to the meet.

"He spoke with them about how much better they will be if they all come out next year (for the high school team)," Watts said. "And fill some holes for the team.
