Robert Walter Smith

Robert Walter Smith, 65, of Nevada, Mo., passed from this life on Feb. 28, 2015, at this home. He was born March 25, 1949, in Frankfurt, Germany, and was adopted by his parents, Woodrow Wilson and Juanita (Gibbs) Smith at the age of three. On Dec. 27, 1977, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Kidder in Mt. View and she survives of the home.

Robert was raised in Espanola, N.M., and attended school in that area graduating from Los Alamos High School. Within a short time he entered the United States Navy serving our country during the Vietnam Era where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star; and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. Upon his Honorable Discharge he returned to New Mexico. In 1977 he moved to Missouri settling in Mt. View for a time before moving to Grandview and then Nevada.

He was a truck driver for many years and also worked for a time as a security guard earlier in his life. He was a long-time member of the Rinehart Christian Church. His hobbies included a long time love of all kinds of trains, fishing, bicycling, and square dancing. But his greatest enjoyment came from time he spent with his beloved dogs, Lucy, Waddles, and Little Bit.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Mary, include daughter, Jeana Lucas and husband, Chuck, of Lenexa, Kan.; son, Woodrow Walter Smith and wife, Michelle, of Harrisonville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Esther.

A memorial service with military honors for Robert Walter Smith is scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, March 5, at Rinehart Christian Church.
