With spring having officially arrived and warmer temperatures holding steady in recent weeks, some younger members of the community now look forward to joining Nevada Youth Recreational Baseball teams for a new season.

The Vernon County Commission and local youth baseball organization representatives signed a two-year lease agreement Wednesday, spelling out which entity would be responsible for which expenses at the ball fields used by the league.

The league will be responsible for maintaining lighting equipment and the drain running from the concession stand to the manhole while the county will maintain other equipment and utilities.

Applications are still being accepted, with a $60 fee, for third through eighth graders interested in playing this season. Brandon Fisher of the league said they are also still looking for adults to coach two of the teams.

Evaluations will be held Saturday from 9a.m.-noon. Practice games will begin in April with regular season games starting the first week of May.

Fisher said they also hope to make some improvements before the season begins, such as bringing in a load of gravel to put near the concession stand. They hope to replace the old bleachers at some point as well, but that project will likely cost at least $3,000, and as much as $8,000 if they get the same size as the current bleachers.

The county commission also met with Kim Mashek, of the Richland Township trustee, concerning the township's clerk, who is moving to Nevada come April but would like to continue in her position if permitted.

Unfortunately, the commission's research during Tuesday's meeting showed that an office holder at a township must live within its borders.

Mashek said so far efforts to seek a new clerk or others for different township positions have failed, despite advertising their need.

"Nobody even showed any interest," Mashek said.

Because they do not have an upcoming election or any names on the ballot, the township will have to hold a special election or appoint someone to fill the position.
