Ellen Eda Mabry, 89, Nevada, Mo., passed from this life on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, in Nevada, following a lengthy illness. Ellen was born Oct. 21, 1925, in Nevada, to Talmadge Dewitt and Eda Ethel (Lockwood) Crawford. She was united in marriage to Thomas Max Mabry on Sept. 24, 1954, in Nevada, Mo., and he preceded her in death in 1993.

Ellen was born and raised in Nevada. She attended Nevada schools graduating from Nevada High School Class of 1943. Ellen went on to attend Cottey College, in Nevada, also graduating from there. In 1970, the Mabry's moved to Sedalia, Mo. During this time Ellen was very active in the First Baptist Church and she sang with the Sweet Adeline's gospel group and performed with them for many years. In 1978, the family moved to Carrollton, Mo., and Ellen played violin in the Marshall, Mo., orchestra, and worked for the First Baptist Church as a secretary until 1986, when she and Tom returned to Nevada. Ellen worked for the Food Pantry, the Public Library, the Neighbors Center and On My Own. She also volunteered at Moss House. In 2006, Ellen moved to Texas and then returned to Nevada in June 2014, to be near both daughters.

Ellen loved quilting and made beautiful quilts for her family. Ellen loved animals all of her life and rescued many dogs and cats over the years.

Survivors include two daughters, Maxann Flynn, Carthage, Mo., and Juell Brandt and her husband, Brad, Nevada; one granddaughter, Marielle Flynn, Carthage; and numerous cousins. In addition to her husband, Tom, she was preceded in death by two sons, Patrick Mabry and Timothy Mabry; one brother, Franklin Crawford; one sister, Carman Foltz; and one grandson, Bryan Flynn.

A graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 2, at Moore Cemetery, in Nevada, with the Rev. Terry Mosher officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Vernon County People for Pets in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
