Cottey drops pair to Mineral Area Community College

The Cottey Comets softball team was defeated 14-2 and 16-1 by Mineral Area Community College, Saturday in Nevada.

The pair of losses brings the Comets record to 1-22 .

Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning of the first game, lead-off hitter Lauren Shepherd laced a single into center field off Mineral Area pitcher Tynai' Burrow.

Next up, the speedy Ciera Wong singled into left-center field, advancing Shepherd to second base.

With no outs and runners on first and second, Comets shortstop Katherine Brockus grounded into a fielders choice, with Mineral Area electing for the force out of Shepherd at third base. Wong advanced to second on the play.

Comets cleanup hitter Alyssa Jones hit a hard grounder to third base, where once again Mineral Area was able to get the lead runner (Wong) with a force out at third. Brockus advanced to second on the play.

With two outs and runners on first and second base, Cottey freshman Jaida Brown, rocketed an 0-2 pitch into the right-center field gap, scoring Brockus from second and Jones all the way from first base, to put Cottey on the board, as they trailed 9-2.

Brown went into second base with a stand-up double.

The inning ended when Comets starting pitcher Samantha Batchelder, grounded out sharply to third base.

The Comets were unable to do any further damage on offense, and scored only 1-run in the second game.

For Cottey, Batchelder took the loss. Game two's starting pitcher Shirley Arreola-Kern, was saddled with the loss.

Next up

The Comets are scheduled to host East Central Community College, today at 2 p.m.
