Racers entertain at Nevada's I-49 Speedway track

Fans who braved the warm weather were treated to an awesome night of dirt track racing action as 70 cars signed in to compete on the one-fourth mile oval at Nevada's I-49 Speedway race track, Saturday.

Racing action included the weekly classes of street stocks, modified, B-modified, late models, pure stocks, and mini stocks.

Street Stock

Action first heated up with the street stock division.

The first victory went to Justin Pike who started on the pole.

Starting on the outside pole both times, Jerry Brown of Prescott, Kan., took both the second heat-win and the feature-event win. Brown now has five victories on the season.

Justin Pike of El Dorado Springs finished in the runner-up position, and Larry Ferris of Kansas City rounded out the top three finish after making his first speedway appearance this season.

Scott Johnson of Nevada, finished fourth, while street stock points leader Mike Bitner of Frontenac, Kan., slid into fifth place.

Modified

The modified division was the second class to hit the track.

The first modified heat-race victory went to Scotty Bough of Nevada, who led wire-to-wire after starting on the outside pole position. Jackie Dalton claimed the second modified victory, after starting on the pole position.

For the second consecutive week, Bough made his way to the feature race winner's circle ---- for his second modified victory of the season.

Last week's feature winner, Jon Sheets of Nevada, would finish in the runner-up position after starting seventh. Lucas Dobbs of El Dorado Springs took third position after starting from that spot. Zack Marsh of Fort Scott, Kan., grabbed fourth-place after making his Nevada Speedway season-debut. Jerry Morgan of Fort Scott rounded out the top five after starting from the fifth position.

B-Modified

Three heat-races featured 20 B-modified racers. The first heat-race win went to Jeff Douty of Butler, who started in the seventh position. This would earn Douty the pole position later on in the feature event.

After starting on the outside pole, the second heat-race victory went to Cody Jolly of Jasper, Mo. The final heat-race win went to Doug Scism of Nevada, who also started on the outside pole position.

In the feature event, Douty would go on to find his way into victory lane, for his second win of the season. The man on the move was Matt Rose of Liberal, who started in the 11th position and zoomed to runner-up.

Rusty Skaggs of Fort Scott placed third, after starting on the outside pole. Blake Ellis of Sarcoxie finished fourth after starting fifth. And Tim Phillips of Fort Scott came away with a fifth-place finish.

Late Model

Two heat-races were scheduled for the late model division, as Joplin's Shannon Phillips claimed the first victory after starting from the pole position.

Dwight Niehoff of Lockwood, took the checkered flag in the second heat-race. Phillips, the track's point leader, sped into first place in the feature event ---- for his third feature win of the season. Niehoff, who claimed the second heat-race victory, finished runner-up after starting third.

Billy Humble of Rich Hill overcame mechanical problems to net third place. After starting from the sixth position, Ethan Young of Harrisonville placed fourth.

Making his first trek to the track, Lane Ehlert of Springfield, notched fifth-place, moving up two spots from his starting position of seventh.

Pure Stock

Three aggressive heat-races took to the track in the pure stock division, as Jimmy Smith of Harrisonville won the first heat-race victory.

After starting on the outside pole position, Joshua Parcell won the second heat-race.

Mitchell Coulter of Fort Scott, captured the final heat-race. In the feature event, Coulter found victory lane for his first victory of the season.

However, Parcell who won his earlier heat-race, would finish in the second position after having a great battle with Norman Mackley.

Mackley of Fort Scott, placed third. Jason Agee of Fort Scott, also the current points leader, finished fourth after starting from the ninth position. Making his pure stock debut, Dustin Beisley of Fort Scott, took fifth, moving up three spots from the eighth position.

Mini Stock

Only one mini stock heat-race was on tap, as points leader James Barker would fly past the checkers after starting third.

Barker's night continued strong as he went on to claim his fourth victory of the season in the feature event.

Mike Baxter of Sheldon, finished in the runner-up position after starting third. Joshua Lawson of Nevada took third-place. Noah Smith of Carthage finished fourth. After starting in the second position, Rob Hail of El Dorado Springs fell back three spots, finishing fifth.

* Aug. 22: Weekly races, plus mechanic races

* Sep. 5: Weekly racing.
