The Archers of St. Louis Community College breezed past the Cottey Comets Saturday afternoon at Hinkhouse Center.

The 88-63 loss dropped Cottey to 3-7 overall. The contest was Cottey's first action since Dec. 12.

During the opening minutes of the game, Cottey struggled to contain speedy Archers point guard Shamara Glover. Glover scored the first points of the contest after pulling down a long offense rebound and then knocking down a three.

With 7:05 remaining in the first, Glover grabbed her second offensive rebound and hit a cutting Alfreda Roberts for the lay-in, as St. Louis went on top 7-2. The Archers lead increased to 12-2 after a Cottey turnover in the back-court resulted in a Shiana Carrington lay-up ---- capping a 7-0 run.

At the midpoint of the first quarter, Cottey guard Syndey Rose drove the lane, scored and was fouled. After Rose knocked down the free throw Cottey trailed 12-5.

Cottey was able to climb back into the game, going on a 10-4 spurt capped by a Kasey Acton mid-range jumper late in the first quarter, trimming the advantage to 21-15.

More importantly for Cottey, was that Glover picked up her second foul and was relegated to the bench for the remainder of the half.

The Comets extended run continued into the second quarter as shooting guard Latasha Griggs slashed into the lane and scored, followed by a coast-to-coast Acton drive for the basket. After the 4-0 start to the second quarter the Comets trailed 21-19.

The Archers however, responded with a 9-2 to run to grab a 30-21 lead with 4:37 remaining in the second quarter. Griggs and Archers guard Shaina Thornton exchanged 3-pointers near the end of the first half, with both players knocking down two apiece. The Archers led 38-30 at halftime. Griggs led all scorers with 12 points.

Second half

Early in the third quarter Cottey's Amber Harper converted a traditional three-point play, shaving the Archers lead to 41-34. St. Louis upped its lead to double-digits at 44-34 courtesy of Glover's nothing-but-net three from the right-wing.

With 6:29 to play in the third quarter, a Rose score and charity-make cut the lead to seven, the closest the Comets would get the remainder of the game. Five quick points courtesy of Carrington pushed the lead to a dozen with 5:35 left in the third quarter. Late in the third quarter the Archers lead swelled to 19 points, as Glover's lay-in handed St. Louis a 59-40 advantage.

Before things completely slipped away, the Comets went on a 10-0 blitz to the trim its deficit to 59-50. With 55 seconds to play in the third, Glover ripped the net from long-range to put the Archers on top 62-50.

The Archers kept the pedal to the metal in the final frame, outscoring the Comets 23-11 for the final 25 point margin.

For Cottey, Rose scored a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds, followed by Griggs with 12 points and six rebounds. Two other Comets finished in double-figures scoring, as Acton and Harper chipped in with 10 apiece.

Leading the charge for the Archers was Carrington, who tallied a game-high 25 points on 10-of-20 shooting. Thornton finished with 17 points, while Glover added 14 points, three assists, and two steals, while also knocking down four treys.

The Comets only made 32 percent of their field goal attempts (22-of-68) while connecting on just 24 percent of their 3-point attempts (5-of-21). Meanwhile, the Archers went 34-of-74 from the field and 10-of-24 from three-point land.
