The students, parents, and staff of Bryan Elementary School collected pennies during the week of Feb. 1-5 in observance of the 100th day of school, which was Feb. 4.

All pennies collected each day were counted and sorted by the kindergarten and first grade students. At the end of each day, the pennies were deposited in the Bryan School Lucille Smith Scholarship Fund.

This year's kindergarten class will add to their scholarship fund as first graders during next year's 100th day celebration. Both scholarships will be awarded through the Nevada-R-5 Scholarship Foundation and will earn interest until the students are seniors in the years 2027 and 2028. All students who were members of the Bryan School classes at the time the pennies were collected will be eligible to apply for the scholarships during their senior year in high school.

The penny scholarship project has been in existence since 1997. The first scholarship was awarded in 2008 to a senior boy and girl.

In the last few years, the community and anonymous benefactors have rallied around this project, adding even more money to the scholarships. Since the beginning of the project, the scholarship fund has grown to $79,000 and continues to accumulate interest.

Starting in 2008, Bryan School Penny scholarships have been awarded to 31 Nevada High School seniors. Bryan School will continue to take penny donations until Feb. 12.
