Rose flourishes at I-49 Speedway with weekend victory

An outstanding field of 33 B-Mods signed in to Nevada's I-49 Speedway Saturday night to duel it out for the event's top prize, the Firecracker $1,500 to-win pay day.

The 33-car field was split into four heat races, with Matt Rose of Liberal winning his heat to earn pole position for the 50-lap main event. Rose took full advantage, leading wire-to-wire en route to victory lane.

Rose, however, faced some spirited competition from Kris Jackson of Lebanon, Mo. Jackson started in the sixth position before surging to a second place finish as he applied the heat to Rose.

"I just hoped to be able to hold off the competition on all of the restarts," an elated Rose said in victory lane.

Last week's feature winner, Randy Zimmerman of Fort Scott, netted third place while John Allen of Chanute, Kan., placed fourth. Fort Scott's Andy Bryant would slide around Steve Muilenburg of Sparta to collect the fifth place finish.

---- Pure Stocks ----

Collecting his third feature win of the season, Tyler Schoen of Halfway, Mo., showed the field of cars how it's done. After beginning the race in the fifth position, Schoen sped to the first place finish.

After a couple week absence from the speedway, Fort Scott's Jason Agee returned in style, earning pole position before being edged by Schoen for the top spot. Agee would settle for second, while Joplin's Josh Parcell moved up three spots to finish in third place.

Weekly competitor Zach Hendren of Nevada, finished in position four, as fellow Nevadan Jaren Powrie, rounded out the top five finish.

---- Mini Stocks ----

After collecting his first win back in May, Grayson McKiney of Springfield, was able to break John Willard's winning streak Saturday night. After coming up just short in his extended battle with McKinley, Willard was forced to settle for a runner-up finish.

Steven Bunton of St. Joe was consistent, as he started and finished in the third position. Delbert Agee of Bronaugh, was able to pass several competitors to finish in fourth place, while Darryl Aiello of La Harpe, Kan., flew by the finish line for a fifth place finish.

---- Midwest Mods ----

Rob Muilenburg of Sparta, found victory lane for this fifth time in 2016.

Rob Muilenburg is simply on fire this season. Muilenburg of Sparta, extended his dominant year as he captured his fifth feature victory of the 2016 campaign, flying the checkers in the Midwest Mods class.

It was no easy task for Muilenburg, as he was pressured by Osceola's Larry Drake. Drake nearly tracked down Muilenburg, but ultimately wound up in second place.

Nevada I-49 Speedway track points leader, Devin Crockett of Lamar, was able to secure a third place finish, while Kyle Lafferty of Sparta earned a fourth place spot. Jerry the "Ice Man" Brown of Prescott, Kan., advanced two spots from his starting position to finish fifth.

---- Street Stocks ----

In collecting his first victory of the season, Jay Lamons of Savonburg, Kan. was able to fly the checkers after holding off challenges from points leader Bob Barnett of Republic, who finished in second place. After starting sixth, weekly competitor, Mike Bitner of Frontenac, Kan., slid into the third spot After capturing the Mini Stock victory, McKiney continued on with a strong fourth place finish, while Bobby Brown of Hume, Mo. cruised to fifth.

---- Late Models ----

Appleton City native Johnny Fennewald, made it back-to-back Late Model wins, scoring his second victory in as many weeks.

Fennewald started on the outside pole position and battled with Larry Jones of El Dorado Springs, who finish a close second place.

Billy Humble of Rich Hill, crossed the finish line after Jones to take the third spot. Also of El Doarado Springs, Dylan Timmerman of cruised into fourth place. It was 72-year-old Darrell Mooneyham of Verona, who would climb back behind the wheel, speeding to a fifth place finish.

Nevada's I-49 Speedway is slated to again hold races the evening of Aug. 13.
