In its season-opening home-event Friday at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course, Nevada High School placed fourth at the eight team Lady Tigers Invitational, with Carl Junction High School coming out on top with a team score of 331.

Joplin High School finished runner-up, five strokes back of Carthage.

"I was very pleased with the way the girls performed today," NHS coach Brian Leonard said. "They told me afterwards that they could knock of five to eight strokes the next time out, and I was happy to hear that.

"I am very encouraged and have high hopes for this group."

The Lady Tigers tallied a final team score of 405, finishing 15 strokes back of third-place Carthage High School.

Playing in her first varsity-level competition, Nevada junior Brooke Sargent carded the Lady Tigers low score, a 98.

"Brooke was struggling earlier in the week with her drive," Leonard said. "But she has been working really hard and is kind of a perfectionist. She is putting the effort in, concentrating on her putts, and her routine has gotten to be very consistent. I was very pleased with her score."

Also seeing her first competition, was NHS sophomore Grace Palmer, who finished with a 101.

"That's a very nice score for her first-ever tournament," Leonard said.

Additionally for Nevada, Mandy Crews and Kaitlynn Vincent concluded the tournament with identical scores of 103.

"I was tickled with those scores," Leonard noted. "I'm hoping we can get our scores to the mid-to-low 90s, and if we do that, there's a very strong possibility that we can win districts while being very competitive in the sectional round. I think we would need a team score in 375-380 range to qualify for state.

"If they can keep scores below 50 per nine holes, that's what we're aiming for, around 45-48," he said.

Also for Nevada, Halley Otter finished with a 115. Leonard said Lily Quitno was under the weather and unavailable for the event.
