Comets net a pair of wins in St. Louis

It was a good weekend for Cottey volleyball, as the Comets won two of its three matches at the St. Louis Community College Lady Archers triangular.

Cottey (7-5 overall) opened its tri-match with a three set loss (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) to East Central College.

"In games one and three against East Central we competed and made 20 and 22 points on a pretty tough region team," Comets head coach Marla Kannady-Foreman said.

The Comets followed the loss against East Central with a four-set 25-18, (25-20), 25-17, 25-20 win over St. Louis Community College.

"In game two, we were ahead 7-0 when St. Louis called a time out," Kannady-Foreman said, "then, they proceeded to tie the game up with a 7-0 run."

The Comets posted some healthy stats against the Lady Archers, with 40 total kills, nine aces, and eight blocks. In addition, six Comets recorded a dig. The Comets had a clean third set, as they did not commit a single hitting error.

Cottey capped the tournament with a three-set 25-21, 25-16, and 25-21 win over Morthland College. Against Morthland, Cottey compiled 60 digs, 49 kills, eight aces, and five blocks. Cottey hit 34 percent as a team.

Sophomore Melanie Dillon filled up the stat sheet with 78 assists, 12 digs, six aces and a pair of blocks. Fellow sophomore Ann Lipscomb recorded 48 kills, 39 digs, and seven aces. Freshman Maddy Hidbon recorded 37 digs, seven blocks, and five kills. Tabitha Jackson chipped in with five blocks; Lily Brockus four; and Sara Marshall one. Sophomore Reita Andrew netted 20 digs and two aces, while Kylee Wilson added an assist.

Cottey finally makes it's home debut, tonight against Longview Community College with the match set for 6:30 p.m.

"We look forward to being on our home court for a change," Kannady-Foreman said. "We've been working the last few weeks to prepare to show our fans some good volleyball matches.

"We encourage everyone to come out and see us."
