Sallie (Grammy) Steve

Saturday, November 5, 2016

Sallie (Grammy) Steve was born in Rockville, Mo. on May 12, 1917, to Elmer and Lucy (Henderson) Dodds. A few months away from 100 years, she was able to always adapt to a changing world and remain true to her optimistic and caring self. She lived alone in her home, thanks to assistance from neighbors and friends.

She is survived by her son, Bill Brown of Springfield and daughter (in-law) Susie, who is in Heaven; granddaughter Heather and husband Hank Segelke, Houston, Texas;

god-granddaughter Karne and husband Lamar Newburn, Chicago; sister-in-law Shirley Guerrieri, Tulsa; stepdaughter Marlene Ogle and granddaughter Natalie and children; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar, and her two brothers, Jason Dodds and Murrell Dodds.

Sallie taught school for thirty-eight years after obtaining her B.S., M.S., and Specialist degrees from Pittsburg State University. She began teaching by riding her horse to a one room school near Rockville, Mo., then to Rockville grade school, followed by Prairie Valley one room school in Nevada; then Walker, and finally Nevada at Franklin and Bryan. Her specialty was helping her students - she wanted them to learn, and they wanted to learn for her.

She was a Business and Professional Woman's past Woman of the Year, 50+ years' member of Alpha Delta Kappa, member of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church. She had been a "Meals on Wheels" driver, and cancer treatment transporter.

Sallie was a woman of great faith and great witness by how she lived and cared for and about others. Sacrificing for others was her way of life. As she assisted others when younger, many others assisted her as she aged. Her example will be missed.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Nevada with Rev. Hubert Fox and Pastor Dave Crook officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, Mo. The family will receive friends from 4:30 -- 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home in Nevada.

Memorials are suggested to the Sallie Steve Memorial Education Fund in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
