The Nevada R-5 Board of Education voted 5-0. With board members Mike McCaffree and Chris Dryer, absent, to add a Maker Lab class at the Nevada Regional Technical Center and to add Edgenuity courses to choices available to students. The use of Edgenuity will provide a larger number of courses for students to choose from.

"What an awesome opportunity for our students," Diann Marti, director of curriculum and professional development, said.

Kora Anderson told the board that the district's attendance policy has helped reduce the number of students who are sent home because of illness, during her review on the district's health services..

She said this year they are sending 4 percent of the students they see home, while last they sent 5 percent home.

"More parents are requesting that children see the nurse before sending them home," she said.

"We continue to see high numbers of kids with mental health problems," she said.

Anderson said there are also an increasing number of students living on their own.

A new program this year in Nevada's elementary schools is a math workshop.

Christie Ast, Megan Stevens and Shawna Erwin, updated the board on the program Ast said they, along with Benton Elementary principal Andy Smith, went to Holister to see their program in action, and started working on establishing one in Nevada the next day.

"It's been great for my students," Shawna Erwin said.
