Comets gearing up for NJCAA District Championships

After its triumphant regional championship victory over St. Louis Community College on Sunday, the Cottey Comets softball team will look to keep its season alive at the NJCAA Division II District Championships, Thursday in Danville, Ill.

The Comets (15-17) matchup with the Danville Area Community College Lady Jaguars –– Region 24 representatives.

Cottey and Danville are slated for two games on Thursday, and will return to the diamond Friday if necessary for the best of three series. Saturday the 13th has been set aside as a rain date.

Game one of the District P series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, with the second game to follow at 3. Game three, if necessary, is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday.

Comets’ notebook

The Comets’ recently announced the signing of high school senior Ashlyn Robertson of Nixa, Mo.

According to information provided by the Cottey athletic department: “Ashlyn is a standout at Nixa High School as well as for the Regal Athletics (traveling) softball team. At Nixa High, Ashlyn was a three- time Academic All-State award winner and a three year starting catcher.

“Ashlyn has a career high school batting average of .376 and is third all-time in RBIs, fifth all-time in home runs, and fifth all-time in total hits.

“In 2016, Ashlyn was an All-Conference, All Region, and All-District selection at the catching position.”

Cottey head coach Mark Skapin said Robertson is a perfect fit for his team.

“Ashlyn is a tremendous addition to the Cottey family in the classroom and on the field,” he said.

“We are incredibly excited about her power, softball IQ, and her passion and dedication for the game.”

COMETS' SENDOFF

Cottey is leaving for Danville, Ill. at 1 p.m., today, and has a special send-off planned for 12:45 on its campus.
