Comets place fourth at College of Ozarks meet
In their second event of the season, the Cottey Comets cross country team competed in the College of the Ozarks home meet held in Point Lookout, Mo.
First-year Cottey XC head coach, Tony Skiles said the meet may very well have been his squad’s most challenging event of the season due to the rugged terrain. Cottey runner Christi Anne Beatty, a junior from Lakeside, Ky., led the Comets through the first mile, but it was fellow junior Victoria Kehler, of Vancouver, Wash., who came away with a medal after achieving a sixth place finish in the 5K. (Note: Top 10 individual finishes receive medals). It was Cottey’s first individual medal of the season.
“We had a goal coming into today’s race to be more aggressive than last week,” noted Skiles. “We were more aggressive, with everyone on the team coming through at the mile and two mile marker faster than last week. We put ourselves in the middle of the race, which gave us a chance to be successful.”
Host College of Ozark claimed the top prize, while the Comets placed fourth at the four-team event. Placing runner-up was Evangel University, while William Baptist College placed third. Finishing first individually, was College of the Ozarks Torri Holder, clocking an official time of 20:16.26.
“Walking away from a challenging course with improvement will give us more confidence for the next race,” said Skiles.
