Tigers fall to Webb, return to the diamond today

After dropping an 8-3 non-conference road contest to Webb City on Tuesday, the Nevada Lady Tigers will look to get back in the win column today against visiting Warrensburg. Nevada (7-6 overall, 2-1 WCC) is currently in the midst of a four-game losing skid, with two of those four contests going into extra innings.

The Lady Tigers were unable get things going offensively early on against Webb City.

“We struggled to carry out our game-plan of looking for a pitch to drive early in the count,” said Lady Tigers assistant coach, Danny Penn. ‘We swung at a lot of early pitches that were not pitches we could drive — and as a result got ourselves out.”

Collecting a hit apiece for the Lady Tigers, were: freshman Abby Harder, 1-for-2 with an RBI; senior Emily Johnson, 1-for-3 with an RBI; freshman Maleigha Hinton, 1-for-3 with an RBI; sophomore Hailee Lundine, 1-for-3 with a triple; and freshman Tylin Heathman, 1-for-3 with a run scored.

“We started to put together some good at-bats in the fifth and were hitting the ball hard,” said Penn. “Tylin and Hailee both hit balls hard to the opposite field and, Abby executed a great push bunt. I was happy that we competed until the end, but we dug ourselves to deep a hole.”

Penn said early defensive miscues proved costly.

“We didn’t get off the bus ready to play,” said Penn. “We committed two errors in the first, which led to two unearned runs (charged to starter Maggie Leisure). “And that put us behind the eight-ball early in the game.”
